Tugboat Annie (comedy-adventure, starring Minerva Urecal and
Walter Sande)
(Syndicated, 1958)
[aka: "The Adventures of Tugboat Annie";
This series was based upon a character in stories which appeared
in "The Saturday Evening Post" magazine during the early 1930s,
written by Norman Raine;
The irascible female character who piloted a tugboat in the waters
of the Pacific Northwest was developed into three comedy-adventure
movies between 1933 and 1945;
The first 1933 movie was produced by MGM; it featured Marie Dressler
and Wallace Beery, and was scored by a number of uncredited composers
including Irving Bibo, Walter Donaldson and Paul Marquardt;
The second movie produced in 1940 featured Marjorie Rambeau and Alan
Hale (who was much later to play the Skipper on "Gilligan's Island";
It was scored by Adolph Deutsch with uncredited cues by Max Steiner;
The final movie in 1945 was a B-picture produced at Republic Studios
scored by Edward J. Kay and featured Jane Darwell and Edgar Kennedy;
On the TV show, character actress Minerva Urecal was featured in the
title role; Walter Sande played rival tugboat Capt. Horatio Bullwinkle
in this series produced by Leon Fromkess with co-funding from the
British Independent Television Corporation (ITC); this TV version
suffered from predictable plots, and a low budget]
