The Robert Q. Lewis Show (comedy-variety)
(CBS Daytime, 1954 - 1956)
[Robert Q. Lewis appeared frequently during the decade of the
1950s on quiz shows including "Make Me Laugh", "Masquerade
Party", "The Name's The Same", "Play Your Hunch", "The Show
Goes On" and, for a time, "Talent Scouts";
Most often he was a host, announcer or sometime panelist
on quiz shows; His thick black glasses frames were his most
notable physical feature; and his voice was always friendly
but his friendliness like some hosts -- seemed a bit forced;
He was given the opportunity to try various formats for his
own talk-interview show; but three previous attempts between
1950 - 1951 both during daytime and primetime failed; Used
to following a tightly scripted format, perhaps he just
didn't have the quick wit needed to keep a talk format fresh
and entertaining like Jack Paar or Johnny Carson, for example;
This daytime variety show was the most long lasting -- for
over two years he managed to host singers and comedians; but
he never succeeded in building a winning ensemble group like
the players on Garry Moore or Steve Allen shows, for example;
Perhaps Robert Q. Lewis's style was a bit more brash and
predictable than most daytime hosts -- more suited to
the game show genre in which he was more successful, and
for which he will probably be best remembered...]
