Captain Gallant [of the Foreign Legion] (children's adventure, starring Buster Crabbe)

    (NBC Sunday Evenings, 1954 - 1957;
     Syndicated as "Foreign Legionnaire")

    [Filmed in France and Northern Italy, this series about the fabled
     French Foreign Legion starred the very blonde American swimming
     star Buster Crabbe, whose heroic golden locks must have been
     presumed universal by producer Serge Glkyson; Buster's son
     Cullen Crabbe even had a supporting role in this drama which
     seemed to have the right combination of ingredients for early
     American television;

     Crabbe's comic sidekick was played by character actor Al "Fuzzy"
     Knight who played the role of "Private Fuzzy Knight", a part he
     was made to play :-)]

Main Theme: "Le Boudin (The Blood Sausage)"

    [this was the famous Marching Song of the French Foreign Legion
     which was interpolated into Opening Titles by Guy Georges Luypaerts
     and Roger Roger; The bandmaster known only as "Monsieur Wilhelm"
     who composed this 16-bar marching song was also the first
     conductor of "La Musique Principale de La Legion Etrangere --
     (The Principal Band of the French Foreign Legion)" which was
     formed March 9, 1831. The Band began with just 27 musicians but
     by 1860 had grown to around 40. The literal translation of the
     title of the Foreign Legion marching song "Le Boudin" is the
     sanguine phrase "blood sausage" -- no doubt meant as a tribute
     to the courage it took to fight in foreign wars. The origin
     of the lyrics to which the music was set are unknown...]
