Small Fry Club, The
(children, hosted by "Big Brother" Bob Emery)
(Dumont daytime, 1947 - 1951)
[When television was in its infancy, Bob Emery (a veteran
local radio host who previously spelled his name "Emory")
moved to New York and got a job as an announcer and producer
at the Dumont Television Network in 1946.
The "Small Fry Club" developed out of local Massachusetts
radio shows Emery did for children since 1921 (one of which
had that same title), and the success of a Dumont children's
series called "Movies For Small Fry", which Emery narrated
as an offscreen voice.
The "Small Fry Club" was a 5-day-a-week show Monday through
Friday, which lasted on Dumont for three years; and some say
it was the first live daily children's show on network TV.
After its run on the Dumont network, just before Dumont got
merged into ABC, Emery returned to Massachusetts where "The
Small Fry Club" continued to originate out of a local Boston
TV station. It has been described as a gentle show with Emery
wearing a business suit and tie, playing the role he originated
on radio, of "Big Brother" Bob Emery.]
