Raggedy Ann & Andy (cartoons)

     (since 1944)

     [this was part of the series of animated "Noveltoons" produced
      by Famous Studios Productions, released by Paramount Pictures
      from 1943 to 1967; other familiar characters were Casper the
      Friendly Ghost, Little Audrey and Baby Huey plus a number
      of lesser-known cartoon characters;

      The original comic strip of Raggedy Ann had been conceived and
      drawn by Johnny Gruelle beginning in 1915; Raggedy Ann was
      a slue-footed floppy-haired rag doll, a cross between a
      circus clown and a country maiden;

      Gruelle had the foresight to take out a "design trademark" on
      Raggedy Ann in 1915; In 1920 Gruelle began creating childrens
      books which featured the character Raggedy Ann and her new
      friend, a boy rag doll character named Raggedy Andy;

      A merchandising contract with the Volland Company to create
      Ann and Andy dolls helped cross promote the books and comics;

      When the public finally began to embrace the characters in
      a big way, creator Gruelle had to defend his rights in a
      number of lengthy legal battles which may have hastened
      his death...]
