(Syndicated, since 1976) [The beloved company of marionettes and puppets ("Muppets") were featured on a number of different series before finding their own; They had a regular slot on PBS's daily children's series "Sesame Street" in the 1960s; But their appeal was wider than children's television, and the creators longed to prove that... The characters of Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy, Bert & Ernie, Cookie Monster and others were created, animated and voiced by Jim Henson and Frank Oz; But they wanted a chance to create a series with wider appeal that had social and political satire... And they got their wish...but had to leave the country to do it; Their ambitious ideas for a prime-time series were heard by US TV network executives; ABC went the farthest in negotiations, but the deal fell apart; So when the concept failed to find an American network, creator Jim Henson and partner Frank Oz accepted an offer from Lew Grade of British ITC to produce the series in England and syndicate it worldwide, which turned out to be the best thing they could have done...The series was given a generous budget and facilities at famed Pinewood Studios in England; Four years of weekly episodes were produced from 1976 to 1981 and re-run for years after that in many countries. Returning to America they had a guest spot on the first season of NBC's "Saturday Night Live"; they created a very successful merchandising franchise plus a number of spin-offs including several TV specials, Muppet Movies and various series revivals including "Muppet Babies" (1984), "The Jim Henson Hour" (1989), "Muppet Time" (1995) and "Muppets Tonight!"
